Hanging out in my backyard I usually say a few words and whistles to my bird PJ. I buried him in a biscuits box under a dogwood tree in my backyard last fall. my sister watched from her window as I put dirt on top of the tin. My mom put a small winged angel made out of concrete at the head of the grave.

to PJ (1992-2007)
"Come over Darling.
We can play cards."
"Don't get a paper cut."
"Don't get red hearts.
"We can go outside
and hold hands--
look into the robin-shelled sky
to soften romance.
"I lost my bird
somewhere out here.
He's under the dirt
somewhere out here.
"Let's listen to
his little song.
I think you'll like it.
It isn't very long."
Singing as the roots
crush his wings.
Singing as the worms
eat his heart.
Whistling along
with the Earth's song.

stratocaster the catocatster
Stratocaster's favorite sleepytime album.
I'm Elyse's cat's dad and it feels probably a little bit close to being a real dad-- maybe even better.
Watching his little body delicately be squashed by mere gravity into the soft blankets on the windowsill.
Watching him curiously react to the newness of life reflects my curiosity of the completely different perspective he has on life.
Is a human baby as aware as a kitten?
Does a human accept the world too quickly?
How is it not too much of a shock to go from not being into being?
A cat's curiosity seems to be wholly justified-- each tiny thing deserves tireless interest.
Observing Strato (my kitten son) causes me to reimagine the ways in which I observe.
How many different lenses is a single reality capable of?
The breath inside the kitten's body--
how is it different from the spirit within us.

Church recommended

51st and Park is the byzantine beauty St. Barts Cathedral.
I think going to church on a sunday is a good idea even if youre not a christian.
this summer st. barts will have choirs and orchestras performing great classical works.
it was a real treat to hear today the Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein (man behind West Side Story's music)

ideas for books (and movies?)
books of poems are more enjoyable to novels because you don't have to read it from cover to cover.
this disallows you from thinking- "i'm halfway through this book," " i'm almost done," " uh-oh! here comes the climax!" etc.,etc.
therefore novels should either be of the "choose your own adventure" variety or the author/editor should purposely put the numbered chapters out of order so you have to flip through to find them
books should also have illustrations no matter what
rockwell kent illustrations or block print/etchings of more abstract images are preferred

know what is also good?
a page from a King-Cat comic (now on sale at Strand)
keeping a journal! it's weird how ideas, dreams, and memories sneak their way into your conscious mind, isn't it? well write em down! that's what they want you to do! draw a little picture for each thing so as to make referring back to it easier and more fun. great examples of this are in James Kochalka's "American Elf Vol. 1 & 2" as well as in John Porcellino's "King-Cat Comix." Both are available in a store near you and are begging to inspire you to follow suit! and plus, when you get famous, or just old/senile, it will be there to humble and enlighten you. it is not hard, once you start you cannot stop.
